Implants are artificial tooth roots made of titanium that are placed in the jawbone to replace teeth that have been lost for any reason. Dental Implants provide better speech, aesthetic and chewing function than traditional prostheses. It is a convenient and reliable application.
In which cases is the implant applied?
1- Situations where there are one or more missing teeth and it is undesirable to cut healthy adjacent teeth to make a bridge
2- Situations where there is no tooth at the back of the jaw and therefore a bridge cannot be made
Since most of the patients in this situation do not want to use removable (plug-in) prosthesis, implant supported porcelain bridge can be used, which is more useful.
3- Situations where it is not possible or desired by the patient to use a total (palatal) prosthesis due to reasons such as the patient's nausea reflex in completely edentulous mouths, poor retention of the prosthesis.
In this case, fixed bridges can be made by placing the implant, as well as various removable prostheses that can increase the comfort of the implant-supported patient.
Can everyone be implanted?
Implants are produced in various diameters and lengths. The jawbone should be of sufficient width and height in the area where implant application is considered. At the same time, the quality of the bone is one of the factors affecting success. Today, insufficient bone can be strengthened with bone graft (powder) applications. One of the most important factors affecting implant success is oral hygiene and gingival health. If the general health of the patient is good, there is no upper age limit for implant application. However, it is not recommended to be applied in young individuals whose bone development has not yet been completed.
Will I have pain while the implant is placed?
The implant is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthesia and you will not feel pain during the procedure. You may start to feel slight pain when the effect of anaesthesia wears off 3-4 hours after the operation. Many patients say that this pain is not different from the pain felt after a normal tooth extraction. This will disappear with the painkiller your dentist will give you.
How long is the treatment period? Can I wear my prosthesis immediately after the implant is made?
Regardless of the number of implants, your procedure can be completed in a single session if you wish. However, there will be a waiting period of 2-5 months to make your upper prosthesis. Your bone structure, which changes this process, is the area where your implant will be applied. This waiting period is the time required for the implant, called "osteointegration", to biologically fuse with the jawbone. After this period is completed, the second phase, the superstructure (prosthesis) phase, is completed in an average of 7-15 days. In the expected time for osteointegration, your dentist will make a suitable temporary prosthesis for you and ensure your oral function.
Is there a risk of cancer?
No evidence has been found in the medical literature showing that implants cause cancer.
Is there an age limit for implant application?
Implants can be applied to any patient who has completed his/her growth and development, and whose general health and bone structure is suitable. Our patient group, who needs the implant functionally the most, is our elderly patients who use removable prosthesis.
How should the patient's oral care be after the implant operation?
After the implant operation, our patients need to pay more attention to their oral care. It is recommended to use tooth brushing, interface brushes, dental floss and mouthwash.
We recommend our patients who smoke to quit smoking because it can cause problems in wound healing and oral care. After the operation, we recommend that our patients come for control at intervals of 3 months for the first year and after 1 year at intervals of 6 months.
